Vets vs. Non-Veterinary Practitioners

In 2007, Carl Mitz, a non-veterinary equine dental practitioner with over 30 years experience, was issued a cease and desist order from the State of Texas. They claim he practiced veterinary medicine. Miniature horse owners use the services of Carl Mitz throughout the world. Carl’s research and experience is an asset utilized by the horse community, veterinarians, and students around the world. He’s a co-author of Dr. Tom Allen’s Manual of Equine Dentistry. The TSBVME has yet to produce a single consumer complaint against Carl. They arbitrarily found him through a Google search of questionable legality.

Texas Vet Board Targets Dentists – Are Farriers Next?

By Steven Long

The Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners is forging ahead like a southbound freight to shut down equine dentists, a trade that has sprung up and is increasingly popular among horse owners. And the dentists are fighting back. On 28, 2007 they filed suit in an Austin court to stop the board dead in its tracks. Who knows what the next step will be in an ongoing battle between the board and the folks who many Texas horse owners believe are best qualified to work on a horse’s teeth.
